Don’t be an April Fool this year

Have you backed up all your personal files? What would you do if you lost everything?

We know we’d be lost without all our files at Sleeping Giant Media, and use online cloud-based Google Drive to our heart’s content! Today is World Back Up Day, and it is a day for people to learn about the increasing role of data in our lives and the importance of regular backups; the initiative was first started by reddit users who were concerned about raising the issue of not backing up.

So far…

  • 30% of people have never backed up
  • 113 phones are lost or stolen every minute
  • 29% of disasters are caused by accident
  • 1 in 10 computers are infected with viruses each month

What Is A Back Up?

A backup is a second copy of all your important files (videos, photos, emails etc) in a safe place somewhere other than your computer.

How Do I Back Up?

Most people backup their files in one of two ways: to an external drive, or somewhere on the Internet.

USB Hard Drive

Choose an external hard drive that has more of a memory capacity than your computer already has. Plus, external hard drives are very affordable nowadays.

Online Back Up

A simple way to start saving your files to the internet is by using online drives such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or even Amazon Cloud Drive to backup the most important things you’re currently working on.

However, online drives don’t usually tend to have very much space, and can only backup one folder on your computer but is still very effective for keeping your documents safe.

Backing Up Your Whole Computer

If you’d rather back up absolutely EVERYTHING (good on you!) – just search for online backup reviews on your favourite search engine. It can help you choose the service that’s right for you.
