Written by our very own, Facebook Certified Planning Professional… oooo!
If you follow us on Twitter, you may have seen that I passed my second Facebook Blueprint exam and received the Facebook Planning Professional qualification. This puts me in a fairly good position to answer questions about the platform.
So, we will start with the biggy – what on earth is Facebook Blueprint?
What is Facebook Blueprint?
Simply put, Facebook Blueprint is an online e-learning platform, used to teach people all about Facebook and Instagram.
With an ever-expanding list of modules, Facebook Blueprint covers everything from setting up ads to implementing a Facebook Pixel, and much more in between. Each module is covered in short courses which take around 15 minutes to complete.
Facebook Blueprint is free to sign up for, which means anyone can learn. Even if you don’t choose to complete the exams, it really is a great thing to sign up for, especially if you have any specific areas of the platform you struggle with.
What about Facebook Blueprint Certification?
If you want to put your knowledge of Facebook to the test, then Facebook offers exams and certifications for those who really know their stuff.
Disclaimer: These are not entry level exams!
These exams are primarily for those who already have experience in running accounts and ads across Facebook and Instagram, and want to demonstrate that they are industry leaders on the platforms. As such, it may be tricky – but not impossible – for people new to the platform to pass.
Currently, there are 3 exams that are available on Blueprint:
- Facebook Advertising Core Competencies Exam
- Facebook Certified Buying Professional Exam
- Facebook Certified Planning Professional Exam
You need to complete the core competencies exam first, but after completing this you can choose from the remaining two exams based on the way in which you use the platform. According to Facebook, there are more of these specialisms on the way, so keep your eyes peeled if you’re thinking of getting involved.
Is it worth it?
This is the million dollar (or should that be £100) question. Each Facebook Blueprint Exam comes with a rather hefty price tag of £100. That means that to complete a Facebook Certification, you will need to spend £200. To make matters worse, if you fail an exam. you will need to splash out on a further £100.
With such a large expense for something many people do not know about, it does beg the question, is it worth it? Below, we have broken down some of the pros and cons of the qualification to help you work out whether to take the leap.
Pro – It helps to reinforce your knowledge
Going through the Blueprint courses reinforced my existing knowledge whilst also showing me many new ways of using the platform to achieve business goals. The courses are well laid out and provide good examples and knowledge checks to help different styles of learners. This means that even if you don’t do the exams, completing the courses can help expand or improve the work you are already doing.
Whilst the courses teach you about the processes and tools directly, the exams are largely structured around what you would do to apply your learnings in real life applications. This forces you to think and process what you learn on the courses, and this, in turn, helps you to improve.
Con – It is pretty damn intense
The examinations can be taken either over webcam or in an approved test centre. If you choose to take it over webcam you need to make sure that the room you are in is stripped of any and all items that could allow you to cheat. This includes ensuring the table is free of mobile phones, pens, paper and even water. In my exam, I was even asked to remove coasters from the table! During the exam, you will be watched via webcam and if you are disturbed, leave the camera, or talk during the exam, you could be disqualified.
Pro – Not many people have it
Though Facebook Blueprint may still be relatively unknown in some industries, this can work to its advantage. The rigorous exam process, when explained, makes for a great anecdote to tell in any sales meetings, and it will help learners, company and clients feel more confident in working on the platforms.
Additionally, it can come with some other unforeseen benefits. As soon as I completed the exam I was invited into a group on Facebook with other people who had finished it. The group is around 800 strong. As you can imagine, the group contains a host of people who really know their stuff, meaning that if you need any help or spot anything new on Facebook, it is a great place to be.
Con – Not many people have heard of it
Google certifications have been around a while now, and have earnt a suitable amount of awareness in other sectors. Because of this, saying someone is Google certified carries an amount of weight that is currently missing from Facebook Blueprint. Though the platform may increase in notoriety in time, the fact that you are shelling out £100 at a time for something with very little weight in and of itself can be a big red flag. The real question that people will need to ask themselves when deciding whether to go for the exam is how to recoup that investment, and best promote successful completion.
Making sure that badges are included in email signatures, sales slides and on the website is a good way to start creating influence with your certifications, and raising awareness of the platform and your knowledge.
Ultimately, choosing whether Blueprint is right for you will be determined by several factors. How much of a hit is £200 (or perhaps more) to your overall income? Are you doing it personally or on behalf of a business? How can you leverage the accomplishment to generate more sales or acclaim?
There are pros and cons to both sides of the argument. Some people might be better off not spending the money and just completing the free courses, others will be able to use the credit to supplement their social media offerings and provide a more professional service – whether that’s for clients or their own brand.
To find out more about Facebook Blueprint, visit their website, or if you have any questions, feel free to send them our way on social media and we will try our best to help.
