What else has been revealed about Google Penguin (if you’d like to get clued up, read about it here)? According to Google webmaster trends analyst Gary Illyes, Penguin is not a web spam algorithm, but rather a link spam algorithm.

Gary asserts that link spam should be the main thing SEOs focus on. By assessing where the link is coming from, SEOs should make a decision based on the site/source it has come from.

Gary further states that looking at site pages, you can make an easy decision whether you should disavow or remove specific links, and this is what Penguin does: it assesses the source page signals, and decides whether it should be ignored. The bonus is that Penguin only ignores the links, rather than devaluing them.
