What is it like being an Account Manager at Sleeping Giant Media?
Here at Giant Towers in Folkestone, we deliver digital marketing excellence, all whilst building a pretty Giant workforce! And you know what? We’re always on the lookout for new Giants – whether that’s for our SEO, PPC, Data, Social or Content teams, or for the other side of our business that deals with Marketing, Commercial, People and Finance!
When it comes to working directly with our clients, the central cog in the operation is the account managers – the ones that keep everything turning, running and bringing it all together to focus on that goal!
But… what does an account manager actually do?
To find out more about the daily tasks of an account manager, we interviewed Jamie Atkins, one of our very own! Read through our conversation with Jamie below to find out exactly what account management at Sleeping Giant Media is like!
When did your Sleeping Giant Media journey begin?
“I originally started at Sleeping Giant Media in 2013 as a search account executive, assisting the account manager in the day-to-day running of client accounts. I had no prior experience in the digital realm let alone marketing, but what I did have was an appetite to learn and put the shed ton of research I had done beforehand into practice.
I’m very grateful to Sleeping Giant Media for giving me the opportunity to do this all those years ago!”
What was it like as a new Giant?
“Being new is always quite nerve-wracking but from day one the atmosphere was extremely positive and I was welcomed into – what was a much smaller fold back then – instantly.
This made onboarding a much less daunting process and straight away you knew what you were getting was invaluable time with very experienced and talented individuals.”
Why did you want to become an account manager?
“Starting in an entry-level role allows you to observe roles of all levels and make a decision on what path you want to follow in your career. I could see how much my manager loved what they did and the passion they poured into everything they worked on.
This is ultimately what inspired me to take the steps forward in the role. I’ve always felt really comfortable being client-facing, but I’ve never enjoyed public speaking and have never felt good at it because of that. It was definitely a wall I wanted to break down, and the account manager role allowed me to do that in a way I felt positive about, but also challenged enough to keep me engaged and pushing through.”
What was the application process like?
“The application process itself was easy. Sleeping Giant Media shows a real genuine interest in you as a person, your experience to date, and also what you have to say, so it makes all communication during the process extremely positive!”
So, what is an account manager exactly?
“An account manager is essentially the bridge between the client and the delivery of digital strategy. As the primary point of contact, they manage the relationship of Sleeping Giant Media with its clients and ensure the best service and highest quality work is delivered at all times.”
What does an account manager’s daily routine look like?
“Communication with clients and the internal, expert teams is core to the day-to-day management of client accounts. Our routine consists of frequent delivery of updates, alignments, and quality assurance of all work that leaves Sleeping Giant Media’s doors, ensuring all digital marketing strategies are met.”
What skills & tools do you find yourself using a lot?
“As we are primarily communicators, I find myself looking at the theory around how best to communicate and get what you need from your team & clients alike. Putting this into practice is one of the best learning opportunities you can get. No one is the same, so being able to adapt your communication style to the type of personality and situation is key to skill growth.”
What have you learnt from being an account manager so far?
“So many things! If I was to pick one, it would be that fully leaning into the role definitely allows you to awaken potential (our company motto!) Whether that be the potential for client performance or your own potential, it’s a crucial piece to the great service we deliver!”

“The best part of the job is two-fold for me.
Working with an amazing bunch of talented, exceptionally skilled people keeps me motivated and in a positive mindset for challenges that arise. Having the support network behind us, there’s truly no limit to what we can achieve as a team!
Having the opportunity to build relationships with clients and speak to people from all levels of organisations is something I personally thrive on.”
Lastly, can you give us three pieces of advice for someone wanting to be an account manager?
“Listen, take note, and action all feedback given to you. Feedback is a gift and always comes from a place of care in our company. Also, remember that it is given because you have the potential.
Take any and all opportunities for training and learning – I’m not just talking about company time here either! Read books, watch videos, look for influential figures on LinkedIn – build your ethos.
You have to take the good with the not so good in this role – there will always be challenges, but the support network is here at Sleeping Giant Media to help you overcome them. Once you do, it’s a great feeling and your bonds with colleagues will be stronger for it!”
