I’ve looked at a lot of blogs recently: beauty blogs, Mummy blogs, interior design blogs, DIY blogs, food blogs…. The list goes on. I’m a huge fan of blogs, and it seems everyone is getting involved in creating their own, and there is a blog about almost any subject.
The beauty of blogs is that they have a captured, targeted audience of people who all like to talk. They create committed communities that all share the same interests and values, which is a fantastic opportunity for marketers. The potential is huge.
In regards to search, blogs are becoming a necessity for websites as a place to update regular and unique content, which is something Google has put a particular emphasis on with their latest algorithm update.

1.) Theme your blog with one concrete topic. Have a purpose! Be passionate about your subject and focus on the thing that matters to you.
2.) Categorise your content. Take a look at the site architecture, content categorisation and menu structure. Identifying what subjects are more important and place them higher up the menu bar. It will help Google identify what subjects are more important, which will help to rank for those terms.
3.) Write regular content about real world stuff. Fresh, unique content will help improve the SEO value of your site, and will keep your readers interested and engaged. There are some nifty tools you can use if you are struggling for content ideas, such as Soolve and Ubersuggest.
4.) Set blogging goals. Even if you are not selling anything on your site, there will always be something you can measure. For example: Twitter and Facebook followers, email sign ups, brand vs non-brand traffic.
5.) Measure goals. Use Google Analytics, Alexa or any other website platform to track goal completions. Find out how people arrived to that point – where they came from, how long they stayed on site. Use this information to help you improve the blog and reach more of the right people.
6.) Build your community. Start a forum, host Google hangouts, start a podcast or even create an App. Spread the word about your blog and find other ways to connect to your community.
