The business world is crowded. You’ve said it, we’ve said it. We all know it. When it comes to the online world in particular, people have access to more information, products and services than they’ve ever had before. While this is great when you’re looking to purchase a plastic ball of nothing (yep, people part with their money for this…) it’s not so great when you’re trying to start a company or launch a new product, in an already crowded marketplace.

In these competitive settings, it’s crucial to stand out from the crowd if you want to succeed. And that, my friends, is where creativity can help you.

The magic of creativity

Creativity is the magic behind every big idea anyone has ever had – fuelling new directions, challenging the previously accepted ways of thinking, and opening doors to new opportunities that may have previously seemed unattainable.

Tucker Marion,  an associate professor in Northeastern University’s D’Amore-McKim School of Business and director of the Master of Science in Innovation program, previously spoke about how “companies who are creative are more successful” – and who doesn’t want to be more successful? “Creativity is essential in business because it’s a differentiator,” he explained.

The stats seem to back this train of thought too, with one Forrester study showing that 82% of surveyed executives thought that companies benefited from creativity – with benefits including more sales, increased revenue, and greater market share. This success has now lead to creative outputs being taken more seriously, with 58% of the respondents saying that they now set goals around creative outcomes. Another 48% also fund new ideas that come out of creative brainstorming, showing that it doesn’t have to be all talk and no action when it comes to creative idea sessions.

The blocker

The blocker comes, however, from actually being creative. This is where people struggle. Recognising that creativity is great is simple enough – but finding ways to then get more creative in your day to day role is not so simple.

So, our tips?

  • Get moving – doing something physical can get your brain to engage and think differently, which is always good for creativity.
  • Go above and beyond – make sure that you don’t put any blockers in place before you even get started. Give yourself plenty of time, and the freedom to go with the flow. Need to come up with 5 ideas? Aim for 25, or 50, or however many will allow you to select the best of the best.
  • Enjoy the process – sitting in a room staring at an empty whiteboard isn’t always the best way to get going. Start a conversation, play a game, do an ice breaker, throw a ball around – whatever you need to do to get those creative juices flowing. 

In an IBM survey of over 1,500 CEOs, the consensus showed that creativity ranked as “the number one factor for future business success”, beating “management discipline, integrity, and even vision” to the top spot. So, if you’re not yet prioritising some creativity in your business strategy – now is probably the time to start.
