Sleeping Giant Media conduct SEO audits of our clients' websitesIf you had asked me 6 months ago how to write a good SEO audit, I probably would have just stared at you with a puzzled and confused expression as if to say, “What is this madness?”. However, since beginning my role here at Sleeping Giant Media last year, I have really been given the chance to get to grips with what writing a full and informative audit is all about.

That being said, I’m definitely no expert yet, and it will take me a lot more time and plenty more audit writing to become just that. It’s a process that can greatly vary from site to site, depending on numerous factors. A full audit gives you the chance to look deeply into a site and really evaluate every aspect in great detail. It’s a brilliant way to introduce yourself to a site and what it offers the visitor.

Arguably, the most important factor of a website is the content it offers the reader. A major part of writing an audit is evaluating all aspects of the content provided. This includes aspects such as duplicated content, which can be a major issue for a sites ranking power, as search engines can struggle to determine which page is to be displayed higher in search results if content is duplicated across more than one page. A great tool that can be used to quickly see duplicated content issues is SEOMoz. This and other tools like it are your new best friend, at least while writing an audit! Interestingly enough, SEOMoz have a fantastic article on their blog, which goes into great detail about how to write a good, and advanced SEO audit.

It is quite natural for me, when I see a website for the first time, to start evaluating and analysing it in my head. This is probably due to the fact that I’ve studied and had experience with numerous types of digital media, including website building. This has meant that writing audits has felt like a natural progression for me into higher level website evaluation, and I feel very fortunate that I have now had the chance to get my head stuck into this aspect of digital media.
