In the middle of last month, Luke went to speak to a group of young entrepreneurs and business studies students at the Canterbury Christ Church University, Broadstairs campus. He was invited by a lecturer who wanted the students to gain some real-life insight into what it really means to start your own business.

Luke’s talk ran through a whole range of topics based upon the journey that Sleeping Giant and him personally have taken over the last five years since the business was set up. However important the academics of business are (the models learnt, etc), Luke was keen to show how those things translate into a business environment.

When Luke, and business partner Anthony, first thought of starting Sleeping Giant Media they were 24 and 23. “So a relatively young age and starting out in a relatively unknown world,” as Luke puts it in the video of the event. Luke hopes that the talk will help the students to avoid some of the pitfalls of starting a new business.

And here’s the presentation:

“It helps me believe in myself”

Some of the quotations from the students are really heartfelt. You can hear more on the video but these really stood out:

“I’m really impressed by [what Luke’s done]. It helps me believe in myself, that I can do it as well.”

“I definitely got a lot more out of it than what I could write down on paper. And maybe a life’s lesson out of it, if I’m honest.”

“I’m fairly entrepreneurial anyway, but after today I feel more confident and less afraid about what’s out there and what’s out in the big old world.”
